Ethiopian Members of Parliament of both houses elected Sahle-Work Zewde as the first Ethiopia president.
Sahle-Work Zedwe was elected after the former president Mulatu Teshome Wirtu tendered his resignation to the parliament.
The former president tendered her resignation on earlier Wensday however its not known why he resigned.
Several Ethiopians took social media to congratulate her.
The ceremonial president appointment comes barely a week after Prime Minister Abiy appointed a cabinet with half of them being women.
In Ethiopia the President is ceremonial while the Prime Minister is the head of the government.
President Sahle-Wok Zedwe Addressing parliament, she also pledged to promote peace: “I urge you all, to uphold our peace, in the name of a mother, who is the first to suffer from the absence of peace.”
Prior to the appointment Sahle-Wok Zewde served as United Nations representative at African Union.
She has served several diplomatic positions, namely the ambassador for Ethiopia in Senegal and Djibouti.
Also served as head of peace-building in Central Africa Republic.
“In a historic move, the two Houses has elected Ambassador Shalework Zewde as the next President of #Ethiopia. She is the first female head of state in modern Ethiopia,” Fitsum Arega, Abiy’s chief of staff, said on Twitter.
“In a patriarchal society such as ours, the appointment of a female head of state not only sets the standard for the future but also normalizes women as decision-makers in public life.”
